The Maganlals have been running businesses in Goa for three generation, now. Hailing originally from Diu, Gujarat, Maganlal Monji Canji, the patriarch of Maganlal Group of Companies and grandfather of Nitin Maganlal migrated to Goa in 1922. His first business of importing Chinese and Japanese crockeries, novelty and presentation articles started in 1928.

The demand for edible mushrooms is a year-round phenomenon, but traditionally, it was only during the monsoons that mushrooms were easily available, sometimes at exorbitant prices. Neshwin Almeida speaks to Dr Sangam Kurade who made mushrooms available to everybody at an affordable price.

Goa has a home-grown brand that capitalized on the market when George Fernandes and company kicked out Coca-Cola and Pepsi in the late 1970’s and has withered the storm and held its ground even after the return of the biggies.

Life is sometimes very funny. Blaise Costabir believes that. His father owned most part of the land that we now know as the Verna Industrial Estate. “What my father got for the whole land, I must have paid ten times more to get a 1000 square meter plot at the estate”, he says.
