A sporting tradition, since 1950

`10,000 as an initial investment (a sum considered princely back then), they began Angleys Sports and Toys shop.

Back when they started, most of the goods came from places like England, Germany, Japan and even Pakistan, and thus, quality was guaranteed. It is this guarantee of quality of the products and services that they offered that steadily attracted customers to them who soon turned into loyalists. Once a few had experienced the quality that Angleys had to offer, the word spread and soon they had built up a reputable name for themselves. The Panjim shop was, at that time, a place where you could buy sporting goods, toys and hosiery. Their massive success prompted the brothers to broaden their horizons and soon, they set up retail stores in Margao and Vasco in 1960 and 1965 respectively.  

The Angle brother have not let any deterring factor – like manpower issues, lack of sporting culture in the state, or the fact that the demand for sports goods being limited in Goa – in the initial stages of their 

business, to take their plans forward. There is an amazing sense of dignity of labour in the family. “Sometimes we have to pick up heavy boxes, load and unload goods along with making various lists and check and double check them. However, none of us mind doing it at all as this is our family business,” says current business head Kishore Angle, one of the brothers who joined the business at a later stage.

Kishore adds that the business has continuously been growing, especially in this day and age when sports has become a rage among people. He believes that most people today are willing to spend on sports goods unlike before when they just started out. At that time, even the wealthy families were hesitant to spend on sports,  choosing education instead.

With the dawn of competition from both, local stores and international chains setting up shop in Goa, Angleys claim to still have enough business coming in to maintain their status as a top notch sports good store. They believe this is solely because of the quality of the goods and services that they offer.

Prabhakar Angle retired from the business in 2004 after training his son Vivek since 1981. From then, there have been various changes made in the functioning. After shifting base to a new store in 2005, they discontinued the sale of hosiery and toys, concentrating instead solely on sporting goods. Available at the store are a wide variety of goods dealing with almost every sport played in the state. From crickets kits to football gear in a variety of 

brands to multi-brand equipment for sports like badminton, table tennis, tennis, squash, etc. One will also find a range of fitness goods available here including, gym equipments, weights and other items. Swimming costumes along with the necessary swimming accessories are available, too.

Unlike before, when majority of the goods were imported from outside India, most of the sporting gear and equipment now comes from within the country itself from Mumbai, Kolkatta, Jalandhar and a few other places. Not only are these goods of import quality and higher durability, they are also highly popular because they are specially made for Indian usage taking local conditions, terrain and other such factors into consideration. 

With Vivek deciding to leave Angleys sports shop and venture out on his own in 2008 and Balkrishna retiring in 2010, the task of taking this sporting legacy forward fell on the shoulders of Kishore Angle. He is assisted by Atish Angle, his nephew. According to Kishore, people keep returning to the shop as through years of providing quality products and services, Angleys has now become a family name. In addition to this, the store is famed for not having duplicate or inferior quality goods, a factor that has indeed made Angleys synonymous with trust
