Passion and dedication are two qualities 21-year-old Minette Pereira swears by. And it is these very qualities that have propelled the youngster, a freelance hair and make-up specialist, into the spotlight. In 2010, she worked with 25 brides and in the year gone by, she upped the count to 35 gorgeous looking, happy and satisfied brides, definitely no mean feat for a person her age.
Minette’s initiation in the world of make-up and hair styling was her mother who is herself a professional hairdresser. “I was just 10 when I would accompany my mother to work. I loved how she would completely transform her clients and their resultant happiness. Helping my mother out in her work really inspired me. I just knew that I wanted to follow her footsteps and make a career for myself in this field,” she says. Her parents, however, envisioned other things for her. With the aim of securing their young girl’s future, they laid emphasis on academics. “Initially it was very difficult for me to convince them about wanting to make a career in the beauty industry. In time, however, seeing my passion and dedication to the trade and more importantly, the vast strides I had made, they warmed up. But studies still remained as important,” she explains. Though Minette credits much of her knowledge, especially the tips and tricks of the trade to her mother, it was her professional training that gave her the added fillip. She pursued a training course at the popular Snip Salon and Spa simultaneously alongside her B Com graduation course. “I worked at Snip as a trainee and learnt a lot,” she says. She got her first big break during her final year of graduation when a common friend introduced her to famed photographer Prasad Pankar. “Prasad needed a make-up artist for his models. He saw my work and liked it and so, for the next three years I worked with him. Soon I got the opportunity to associate with famed Goan designer Monty Sally on his shows. Since then, there’s been no turning back,” she says.
Commenting that she repeats looks, the youngster adds, “My signature style is big up-dos, with simple glamorous makeup.” I badly wanted to succeed in this field, more than anything I ever wanted in fact. If you really want to succeed, your passion speaks for itself and there is nothing that can stop you,” Minette says. And it’s this very passion that fuels the youngster who says she hasn’t taken a break or a holiday ever since she was 16. “My passion does not allow my conscience to take breaks,” says says. Interestingly, in the middle of her hectic schedule, Minette still prioritizes her studies. She is currently in her second year at the Salgaocar Law College. Doing the perfect balancing act, she uses every semester break to head to Mumbai for advanced hair and makeup courses, her first one being that immediately after her final graduation exam. “Goa doesn’t have too many big brand names or global exposure, but it’s catching up,” she explains. As for her future plans, Mumbai is definitely on the radar as Minette wants to work in the glamorous and lucrative film industry. Topping her wish list of celebrities she’d like to work on is Aishwariya Rai Bachchan. “But for now, at least till 2013, I will be in Goa itself as I am fully booked till then.”
